Companies spend tens of thousands of dollars training sales people in techniques to try and force or pressure you into buying what they want to sell you. And because, by nature, most of us are reasonably polite and don’t want to give offense, we allow ourselves to be pushed into a corner!
Unfortunately there aren’t any courses in anti-sales training and they don’t teach you that in school.
The first thing you need to remember is the 'Golden Rule'. That is, the person with the gold (that’s you!) makes the rules! You don’t have to be nasty in saying ‘No’. You don’t have to be rude refusing to answer their questions. You definitely shouldn’t get upset – after all they’re only doing their job. And you should always smile!
A client recently shared with me how she hated going shopping because of pushy saleswomen. She said they ‘get me in the dressing room and I can’t get out’, ‘they tell me I look great when I know I don’t’ or worse infer ‘I just don’t know what suits me’ or’ you wouldn’t be able to afford that, dear’.
